If we look at the history of Gawadar, on September 8, 1958, Pakistan bought a small uninhabited area of Gawadar from Oman, which was considered a fish village, for Rs. 5.5 billion. At that time, Sultan Muhammad Shah, known as the Aga Khan, played a large part in paying this amount.
Two key clauses were added to the agreement.
(1) The whole of Balochistan will become a military base for Oman, as a result of which the Baloch will be an important part of the Omani forces.
(2) The resources of Gawadar will be further augmented.
On July 1, 1977, Gawadar was annexed to Balochistan. In 1993, the government of Pakistan formulated a plan to turn Gwadar into an international port and connect it to all major highways and railways in Pakistan. On March 22, 2002, government-run development work in Gwadar began. Phase 1 was completed in March 2007.
On March 20, 2007, Gawadar Port was inaugurated by President Pervez Musharraf. He was accompanied by then-Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, Balochistan Governor Owais Ahmad Ghani, and then-Chinese Information Minister Li Shenglin. In March 2007, China provided 80% of the initial cost of the Gwadar port at 24 248 million Dollars.
President Pervez Musharraf announced Rs 5 crore for the development of Gawadar suburbs and assured that the federal government would provide another Rs 10 million for the provision of education, health and sewerage facilities in Gawadar. This was announced in 2015. More development work will be started in the city and port under the CPEC project at the cost of 1.62 billion dollars.
The project aimed to connect North Pakistan and West China through a port. The port will also prove to be the best source for bringing LNG, which will become the 2.5 billion dollar Gawadar Nawabshah project under the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project. In this regard, construction was started in June 2016 in the Gawadar Special Economic Zone, which is being constructed on an area of 2292 acres adjacent to the port. Here we take a look at the history of trade through liner ships and containers around the world.
According to the World Shipping Council, there are currently 400 liner services available, most of which run weekly.
